How To Enjoy Your Workouts

The more fit you are, the less hard you have to work and the less strenuously you breathe when doing other, general physical tasks that are part of daily living.

Through exercise, you build up your cardiorespiratory and muscular systems and make them more efficient.

But what if you haven't worked out or been very active in a long time?

You may have tried exercising and found it to be difficult or tedious. You may have given up on exercising or being physically active because you simply didn't enjoy it, or were embarassed about being out of shape.

The truth is: a properly structured, rational fitness program does not have to be tedious or difficult.

My basic approach is that your exercise or fitness regimen should be as effective, efficient and enjoyable as possible -- especially if you are just starting out. This helps you get results more quickly—truly lasting results that can have a profound effect on your health and wellbeing.

When working with clients who are just beginning a fitness program, I place the emphasis on "enjoyable". Why?

Well, human nature being what it is, we all naturally gravitate toward people, things and experiences that we enjoy and that give us pleasure. And we tend to move away from or avoid those things that cause us pain or discomfort.

You may have the best intentions in the world. But if you start out on a fitness program that causes a lot of pain or discomfort, then you will naturally begin to dread the thought of exercising. You will give up on it before you really get to see any benefit from it.

As an example: Have you ever been walking or driving and passed someone jogging towards you all hunched over, looking like they are ready to die?

It’s downright painful to see someone so obviously NOT having fun!

While it’s important to push yourself and stretch to do more, if you push too hard, or your routine is too difficult and unenjoyable, you won’t stay with it.  You’ll get to the point where you would rather clean toilets than do the day’s exercise.

You should enjoy your fitness routine.  With a properly structured workout, you should feel good at the end of it.  You’ll have a warm feeling of tiredness or fatigue—a “”good” tired.

You’ll feel great because you’ve moved that body and completed the most important “to do” of the day.

This principal was emphasized by the old-time physical culturists of the late 1800s and early 1900s.  They achieved prodigious and seemingly impossible feats of strength and endurance.  Yet they didn’t kill themselves in their training.  They would stop just before they reached the point of significant fatigue or exhaustion.

This approach allowed them to train more frequently and holistically while avoiding overtraining and injury.  It also supported their efforts to conserve and build up the body's vitality.

I like their approach! And I heartily recommend that you consider it when structuring your own fitness program.
